PSYCHOSOCIAL SUPPORTS & PSYCHOSOCIAL RECOVERY COACHING
(NDIS-0106/0128) SERVICES
What is Psychosocial Supports and Psychosocial Recovery Coaching?
Living with a psychosocial disability can make everyday life feel unpredictable, overwhelming, or harder to manage than it should be. Under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), there are two key types of capacity-building supports designed to help, Psychosocial Supports and Psychosocial Recovery Coaching.
While they are related, they are not the same, and understanding the difference can help you choose the right support for your needs.

🧠 Psychosocial Supports
Psychosocial supports is not a registration group itself as it is a broad term and are a general category of funded supports within an NDIS plan for people living with a psychosocial disability, that is, disability stemming from mental health conditions that affect daily functioning.
The nature of registration category depends on the type of service being delivered. Whilst there are a variety of registration groups that do fall under this category, Focused Mental Education has been authorised from the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission to currently deliver these psychosocial support services under registration group 'Asist-Life Stage, Transition' (0106). From this we focus on building practical skills and confidence so you can manage daily life more independently. These supports may help you:
-
Develop routines and structure;
-
Improve social and community participation;
-
Build confidence in decision-making;
-
Strengthen life skills such as budgeting, appointments, and communication;
-
Work toward your personal goals; and
-
The focus is on improving everyday functioning and increasing your independence over time.

🧠 Psychosocial Recovery Coaching
Psychosocial Recovery Coaching is a specialised NDIS support designed specifically for people living with psychosocial disability. It is a distinct support item within an NDIS plan and is only available when Recovery Coaching is formally included in the participant’s funded supports.
Focused Mental Education has been approved and authorised from the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission to deliver these psychosocial recovery coaching services under registration group 'Therapeutic Supports' (0128) and at times may also encompass elements of psychosocial support services under registration group 'Asist-Life Stage, Transition' (0106). Recovery Coaching takes a holistic, strengths-based approach and focuses not just on daily tasks, but on long-term recovery, empowerment, and building a sustainable support network.
A Recovery Coach works alongside you to:
-
Support your mental health recovery journey;
-
Strengthen resilience and self-management skills;
-
Coordinate and align your NDIS and community supports;
-
Help you navigate challenges and setbacks; and
-
Develop a recovery-oriented plan tailored to you
🔎 In simple terms: all psychosocial recovery coaching is a type of psychosocial support, but not all psychosocial supports are recovery coaching.
